Following a Dream in 2017 – Day 65 of 100

Santa Monica Airport (1 of 1).jpg

I created an author blog today to better showcase American Vineyard and my other books. It took several hours to build. I’ve discovered that WordPress is the best platform for my work, and it’s easy to direct friends and customers to the various pages I setup to provide more info.

My next step is to find the best way to reach a wider audience. I know that won’t be an easy task.

Following a Dream in 2017 – Day 62 of 100

Flowers Food Fare 2017 (1 of 1).jpg

I decided to update the watermark on my photos now that I’m using a new camera. In a way, this will help me determine the photos that I was shooting with the Nikon 5200D vs. the photos that I’m now taking with my Sony Alpha 7rii. Organization applies for photography as much as it does for other jobs. Photos and files can easily get cluttered as an artist’s portfolio  grows, so anything that can help categorize and label those photos and files is a big help. While a watermark signature doesn’t seem like much, you’d be surprised how often a loose picture ends up in an unlabeled folder or random email, causing a bit of confusion as to source of the picture and technical details of the image. This is especially true when uploading or printing photos. A photographer must have all the information on a file in order to make sure an upload transmits successfully, or to ensure the proper resolution of a large print.

So this watermark update is more than just for aesthetic purposes.

Following a Dream in 2017 – Day 61 of 100

It rained a bit more in Southern California today. Not much. It was just a sprinkle, perhaps the last remnants of this wet winter, but the temperature outside was just as cold as it had been several weeks back during the heart of the storms. It was chilly enough today to convince me that taking pictures of the Manhattan Beach Pier would be better done on a later day of the month.

Today’s picture is a shot of Camel Rock in New Mexico. That area is often covered in snow during the winter, usually the only time I can visit my home state, so it’s nice that I captured it during a warmer time of the year. The flare of the sun came out wonderfully.

Small Plane - Santa Monica Airport (1 of 1).jpg

I got to test my camera today at the Santa Monica Airport. This shot above was taken right after sunset, and there was just enough cloud coverage to give the sky a little color to add to the planes parked on the tarmac. I liked the mirrored surface of the tail. The palm trees to the right added a nice touch, too.

More testing tomorrow.

I received my new camera today! I’m excited about using it because I know the pictures will come out beautifully as long as I’m using the right settings. I did a few test shots today and I discovered I’ll need to upgrade my software to handle the raw files. After researching this issue, I discovered it is a common problem when buying new gear because the file format is also new. Tomorrow I will experiment more with the Sony Alpha 7rii and see about the newest Lightroom release.

Following a Dream in 2017 – Day 55 of 100

shot-10

American Vineyard is now available as an ebook on Amazon! I’m excited that it is finally available for sale after 15 years! I’m still working on the print version of the novel, which is having a little formatting issues. Marketing and promoting the book will be difficult, as it always is with fiction, but this is my fifth novel so I’m up for the challenge to make this new story a success.

Today’s blog picture is a shot of Yosemite. I’m considering going up there with my girlfriend for my 40th birthday. If I do, I expect the area to be very green and beautiful during the spring because of all the rain that has drenched the state.

Following a Dream in 2017 – Day 54 of 100

train-1-of-1

I finally got my refund for my camera today. I’m happy because I got to place the same order with a different company, and I’m expecting the new equipment in the next 3-4 business days. Photographers are funny when it comes to upgrading gear. We are like kids on Christmas, impatiently waiting for the day to arrive when we can tear into our new gift and play with it. Some people would call us borderline obsessive about it. I’m not here to dispute that claim as people of my friends would probably provide testimony and pin that same label on me.

So now I must wait. And wait…
